When you attend a HypnoBirthing™ course, your practitioner gives you two things in your first class: a copy of Marie Mongan’s book, HypnoBirthing™ – The Marie Mongan Method, and a CD created by Marie Mongan that has two 25-minute tracks: ‘Birth Affirmations’ and ‘Rainbow Relaxation’. It is recommended that you listen to at least ‘Rainbow Relaxation’ (or that you practise it with your birth companion) every day, preferably at the same time and in the same place.
As a practitioner myself, I have the book and the CD of course. And as an expectant mum who is into HypnoBirthing™, I’ve recently started a routine whereby I listen to the CD while my husband reads stories to our daughter at bedtime. I lie down comfortably in our sofa, put on my headphones and turn on my MP3. I let my body relax totally at the first sentence and then just let the words wash over me. Then it’s all a blur and I can’t remember much of what I’ve been hearing. This is hypnosis at its best – total relaxation, the words reaching your unconscious and doing the work for you.
At the moment, I’m really enjoying listening to the ‘Birth Affirmations’ track first. Maybe not the whole track, but at least half of it. And I’ve discovered over the last few nights that each time I listen to it, my brain focuses on a different affirmation, or on the same affirmation in a different way (sometimes an affirmation can take on a new meaning). The one it heard in particular yesterday was ‘We birth easily’. I suddenly really understood the importance of the fact that WE do this together – Baby and me. Me AND Baby. I give birth easily, and my baby comes out easily, wriggling its way out calmly and confidently, the way babies know how to and do in normal circumstances.
This birth will be OUR birth, in synergy.
