Having gone 11 days overdue and having an induction booked, I was thoroughly fed up and highly emotional when I went to see my midwife for a final stretch and sweep. She was super confident that I would labour naturally and that my baby wasn’t going to be long. Boy, was she right!
I woke up at 1 in the morning with my first surge, which then proceeded to happen every 15 minutes. After an hour, I woke my husband up and said that I was going to go into the spare room and listen to my MP3s to try and relax myself as I thought something was happening. Within 45 minutes, my surges had increased to every 5 minutes and were increasing in intensity. At this stage I woke my husband and asked him to help me focus on my breathing as I knew that this was what I needed in order to deal with the surges. Before I knew it, my surges were every 3 minutes and we were on the way to the birthing centre, which was exactly where I wanted to labour.
Once I was on the unit, I was able to use the birthing pool, which was relaxing, and during this time my husband was able to do some soothing strokes for me and I found myself looking to him to focus on my waves of relaxation breathing. When I had transitioned and was in second stage, I found that I wanted to be stood up and so I got out of the pool. I was really pleased to be in second stage as I felt that I had something productive to do in listening to my body as it started to want me to breathe my baby down. The feeling was amazing and I was even smiling and laughing through the surges as I was so excited that my baby was almost here. During this time, my midwife was happy for me to continue with my breathing exercises and she said that she would only step in if there was any need to help the baby. It was wonderful to have a midwife who was fully supportive of my choice to hypnobirth and who allowed me to relax enough that I could easily focus on staying calm and doing what felt right to me.
Finally at 5:48am my baby arrived and was passed up to me for skin to skin. Whilst my birth experience was not exactly how I had visualised it, mainly because everything happened so quickly, it was completely perfect for me. I know that the relaxation techniques I learnt through hypnobirthing were key to me having a positive birth experience. My husband also found the hypnobirthing experience fantastic and was really pleased to have some ideas as to what he could do to help me and play a positive role rather than feeling that he didn’t know what to do.
