Today is International Maternal Mental Health Day.
Maternal mental health is a subject very close to my heart. I help prevent birth trauma, maternal anxiety and depression by providing a full antenatal course about preparing for the rest of your pregnancy, your labour and birth, and your postnatal period, from day 1 to way beyond. When clients suffered from childhood trauma or birth trauma last time, I first help them resolve those traumas, and then support them in preventing further trauma or other mental health issues, from lack of self-confidence to high levels of stress and anxiety to postnatal depression.
Indeed, I’m all about trauma resolution, but also about trauma PREVENTION. They are often inextricably linked together, as so often the difficulties that develop in early parenthood stem from past hurts, past traumas, past difficulties (but not necessarily).
Continuity of care is crucial for this reason and is very important to me when I help my clients. I love providing information and support to the couples I teach the Wise Hippo Birthing Programme to, from the day they contact me to way beyond their birth. I don’t just prepare them for birth, I prepare them for the whole host of issues they may be confronted with in early parenthood, and if they still have difficulties with some aspects of their lives, they know where to find me.
