Just letting you know about the safe arrival of our baby daughter on Tuesday night!
Labour started with a show during the early hours of Tuesday morning. I went back to sleep and then the surges started at 5am. I couldn’t sleep any more so I put on the Wise Hippo mp3s, which helped keep me calm. Throughout the day, the surges continued mildly and I continued listening to the mp3s, trying to relax and breathe through them and also went for a little walk. By about 6pm, they were coming every 5 minutes but they still felt mild and I was calm, so we decided to go to the Wallingford birthing centre.
On arrival I felt very comfortable in the birthing room. I let the midwife examine me and it turned out I was already 5-6cm, which was a surprise as I felt ok. The surges then gradually started to get stronger. We put on the Wise Hippo instrumental mp3 (which stayed on repeat for the entire birth!) and I used the breathing techniques to get through them.
I then decided to try the pool, which took away some of the pressure and helped to relax me. The midwives were amazing and let me get on with things and also said ‘surges’ instead of ‘contractions’ (because they heard us talk about surges), which I thought was very sweet! Julian was brilliant and if I lost my way he got me to copy him using the breathing techniques and kept reminding me to relax.
As the surges got stronger still, I felt I needed some gas and air but this time [third baby] I was much more controlled about how I used it – just a couple of breaths of it at the start of a strong surge and then I breathed and hummed my way through the rest. I actually ended up humming a lot throughout the birth as I felt this release of controlled noise really helped!
Towards the end, the baby became partially crowned in the pool but then there was a panic as she got stuck so the midwife wanted me to get on the bed quickly. I have to say I screamed at this point as it wasn’t a great time to clamber out of the pool onto a high bed!!
Once on the bed, I got back in control and she was born not long after at 10pm. I managed to escape any stitches (for the first time!) and Alice was totally relaxed when born and didn’t cry. She weighed 9lb 14oz so not a small one! She’s lovely and we’re now muddling through trying to remember how to look after a newborn…! The Wise Hippo techniques definitely helped me – the midwife said she’d never seen anyone so calm during labour, which I never thought anyone would say about me!! So thank you very much for your teaching, Saveria. It made all the difference.
